Geographic Information Systems

Description

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) incorporates geographical features with tabular data in order to map, analyze and assess real world problems.  In the municipal field, GIS is used for asset management, preventative maintenance, modelling, mapping and visualization.

GIS can be used in municipalities to record locations of water distribution, wastewater and storm collection systems.  Data is attached to each of the water, wastewater and storm water assets.  The location information coupled with the data can be used to analyze amongst other things, the performance, age and risk of the individual assets.  Data can also be dynamically updated to analyze repair and preventative maintenance history as an example.
